November brings the tradition of the Bayreuth Festival to Classical 89. Besides the broadcast performances of the new productions of Parsifal, and Tristan und Isolde, Walter Rudolph presents “The Saga of Bayreuth 2008” with interviews, music and commentary gathered during the 2008 Festival. Join us to experience the city and festival made famous by the 19th century’s most studied composer, Richard Wagner.

Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique

Hector Berlioz’s only symphony has been celebrated for its genius of melody and orchestration. The work also depicts a vivid story of unrequited love. Join Classical 89 as Kory Katseanes conducts the BYU Philharmonic in this lasting monument of extreme romanticism.




Faust

Metropolitan Opera: Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust

The Met broadcasts return with a network premiere of a work described by Berlioz as a “dramatic legend.” It was the composer’s second attempt at setting the Faust legend to music, and the result is not exactly an opera, nor is it a symphony, but it is a work that cries out for staging. Join us as Susan Graham, Marcello Giordani, and John Relyea aptly portray the legend’s three dynamic characters.
